A marine diesel shares a combustion principle with a truck engine and almost nothing else that matters to you as an owner. It is cooled by the sea it floats in, it corrodes from the inside as well as the outside, it spends most of its life switched off, and when it stops working you cannot pull over.

What makes a marine diesel different
It is cooled by seawater
Almost every marine diesel in Australia is raw-water cooled. Seawater is drawn in through a skin fitting, past a seacock and strainer, through a rubber-bladed impeller pump, and through a heat exchanger where it cools the engine’s own closed coolant circuit before being injected into the exhaust and pushed overboard.
That single design choice creates most of the failure modes on this site: the impeller, the strainer, the heat exchanger, the exhaust elbow, and every corroding component in between.

The exhaust carries water
Water is injected into the exhaust to cool it. It works well, and it means that a corroded or carbon-blocked exhaust elbow can back seawater down into the cylinders while the engine is stopped. That is how a routine maintenance item becomes a hydrolocked engine with bent rods.

It corrodes electrochemically
Dissimilar metals in seawater form a battery. Sacrificial anodes are deliberately made of a metal that corrodes first, protecting everything else. When anodes are neglected, the corrosion doesn’t stop — it moves to the heat exchanger, the aftercooler, and the engine itself.

It runs at sustained high load
A car engine spends its life at a fraction of its output. A boat pushing a hull through water is working hard the entire time it is running. There is no cruising, no coasting, no overrun. Cooling capacity, fuel delivery and oil condition all matter more than they would ashore.
It sits still for months
This is the one owners underestimate most. Fuel degrades in the tank and grows microbial contamination at the water interface. Seals dry. Impellers take a set. Batteries sulphate. Then the boat is asked to run hard on the first trip of the season — which is why most marine engine failures happen in the first hour of use, not the hundredth.

Engine types you will meet
- Shaft drive inboards — the traditional arrangement; engine, gearbox, shaft, propeller.
- Sterndrives — engine inboard, drive leg through the transom. Bellows, gimbal bearings and universal joints are the wear items.
- Saildrives — a vertical leg through the hull on a sailing yacht, with its own seal and anode regime.

Frequently asked questions
How long should a marine diesel last? A lightly loaded yacht auxiliary can run for decades; a hard-worked charter engine measures its life in thousands of hours. Hours matter less than how the engine was cooled, how clean its fuel was, and whether it was used regularly. → How long should a marine diesel last
Is a low-hours engine a good buy? Not automatically. Very low hours on an older boat usually means long idle periods, which cause their own damage — degraded fuel, dried seals, internal corrosion. An engine used regularly is often in better condition.
Why is marine work more expensive than automotive? Access in a confined engine bay, marine-specification parts, work performed afloat, and sometimes a haul-out. The labour content of the same nominal job is simply higher.
Can my car mechanic service my boat engine? No, and you shouldn’t want them to. Raw-water cooling, heat exchangers, anodes, wet exhaust and gearboxes have no automotive equivalent.
What is the single most important maintenance item? The raw water circuit. Impeller on schedule, strainer clear, anodes checked, and the exhaust elbow inspected before it blocks.
