Marine work is several different trades
Getting this wrong is the most common way boat owners waste money.
Marine diesel mechanic / marine engineer. Servicing, diagnosis, cooling system work, fuel systems, most repairs. Your first stop for anything you can’t identify. → Marine diesel mechanic
Marine electrician. Charging systems, alarms, instrumentation, and the corroded connections behind a surprising share of “engine” faults. Overlaps with mechanics but is its own trade. → Marine engine electrical
Diesel fuel injection specialist. Tests and calibrates injectors and pumps on a bench. Usually the same shops that serve trucks — the injection hardware is often shared. → Marine injector testing and replacement
Transmission specialist. ZF, Twin Disc and Hurth gearboxes are rebuilt by specialists, not by general workshops. → Marine gearbox service
Shipwright / slipway. Anything below the waterline: shafts, cutless bearings, propellers, skin fittings, and haul-out. → Slipway and haul-out engine work · Propeller shaft service
Engine reconditioner. Machining, rebuilds, exchange engines. → Marine engine rebuild
Marine surveyor. Independent condition assessment, usually pre-purchase. A surveyor is not a mechanic and does not do repairs — which is exactly why their assessment is worth having. → Marine engine survey
Dock visit, workshop, or haul-out?
Mobile / dock visit covers servicing, diagnosis, impellers, filters, anodes above the waterline, electrical, alarms and most routine work. Most marine mechanics work this way by default — the boat rarely comes to them. → Mobile marine mechanic
Workshop is needed for bench work: injectors, pumps, gearbox rebuilds, turbochargers, cylinder heads, engine reconditioning.
Haul-out / slipway is needed for anything below the waterline — shaft, cutless bearing, propeller, skin fittings, saildrive seals, and hull anodes.
On-water emergency is its own service, priced accordingly. → Emergency and on-water breakdown repair
How to choose
- Are they experienced on your engine? Ask directly: “how many Volvo Penta D4s do you see a month?” Marine brands differ enormously and dealer-level diagnostic software is brand-specific.
- Can they get to your boat? A mechanic without access to your marina, or without a tender for a mooring, is not an option regardless of how good they are.
- Do they have the diagnostic tools for your engine? Modern electronic marine diesels — Volvo Penta EVC, Cummins, Caterpillar, Yanmar — need manufacturer-level software. A generic reader will not do it.
- Will they quote with parts and labour separated?
- What is the authorisation threshold above which they must call you?
- For a commercial vessel: do they understand your survey obligations and will their paperwork satisfy them?

Your rights
Repairs in Australia carry consumer guarantees that cannot be contracted away: work must be carried out with due care and skill, and parts must be fit for purpose. A workshop cannot charge you for unauthorised additional work.

How we list operators
Every listing is verified before it appears and re-checked every six months. We record the business name, the marinas and precincts they cover, services, engine brands and dealer authorisations, licence or accreditation where applicable, and the date we last confirmed the details.
Paid referral relationships are disclosed on the listing itself, above the fold. We do not accept payment for a higher ranking within a page.
Frequently asked questions
Do marine mechanics come to the boat? Usually, yes — most marine diesel work happens at the berth. Bench work and haul-out jobs are the exceptions.
Do I need a dealer, or will an independent do? Independents are frequently better value and often more experienced on older engines. Dealers hold the advantage on new engines under warranty and on faults needing factory software or a software update.
How do I find someone for an engine nobody has heard of? Start from the base engine. Many yacht auxiliaries are Kubota industrial blocks under a marine cover, which widens your options considerably. → Marine diesel engine brands
Can a truck diesel mechanic work on my boat? For the fuel injection side, sometimes — the hardware overlaps. For cooling, exhaust, corrosion, gearboxes and drives, no.
What does a call-out cost? Marine call-out is normally charged as travel plus labour, higher for on-water attendance. Each location page carries the local band.
