Marine Engine Corrosion Repair in Australia

Corrosion is the background process on every marine engine in Australia. It never stops, it works from the inside as well as the outside, and it is the reason marine engines are retired far more often than they are worn out.

The kinds, and what each attacks

Galvanic corrosion. Dissimilar metals in an electrolyte. Controlled by sacrificial anodes, and uncontrolled when those anodes are neglected. → Anode inspection and replacement

Stray current corrosion. An electrical fault putting current through the water and into the metal. This is fast and destructive — it can consume a propeller or drive leg in a season. Causes include wiring faults, poor bonding, and shore power problems, sometimes originating from a neighbouring boat.

Crevice corrosion. Under fittings, in joints, beneath fasteners, where oxygen is excluded. Common on stainless in salt water.

  • Alternator and starter cases, and every electrical terminal
  • Exhaust elbow and manifold
  • Heat exchanger and aftercooler end caps
  • Engine mounts and their fasteners
  • Gearbox housing and cooler

Repair, and when it is not worth repairing

Some corrosion is repairable — cleaning, treating, replacing fasteners, remaking electrical connections, replacing individual components. Some is not. A block or head with corrosion into a water jacket, or a manifold corroded through, is a replacement.

The honest assessment is worth paying for. It is common for a corrosion inspection to conclude that an engine is economically finished, and knowing that before spending on a series of individual repairs saves real money.

  • Anodes correct for your water, inspected and replaced on time
  • Coolant with live inhibitors, changed on schedule
  • Engine bay ventilation — trapped humid salt air is the enemy
  • Electrical connections protected and inspected; a corroded earth causes faults that look mechanical
  • Freshwater rinsing where practical
  • Investigate anodes wasting abnormally fast rather than just replacing them
