Marine Diesel Engine Problems and Symptoms

Shut down now if you see any of these
At sea the calculus is different from a road vehicle: you cannot pull over, and a small problem becomes a rescue. These four mean shut down and assess.
- Overheat alarm sounding — a marine diesel with no cooling water will destroy itself in minutes, and a melted exhaust hose is a fire and flooding risk.
- No water coming out of the exhaust — the earliest and clearest warning you get. Shut down before the temperature gauge moves.
- Low oil pressure alarm — every second running is bearing damage.
- Water in the cylinders — do not crank the engine. Cranking a hydrolocked engine bends rods.
If you are underway and unsure, the safe order is: reduce load, check for cooling water at the exhaust, shut down, then diagnose.
Cooling and overheating
The largest category in marine diesel, and the most preventable.

Water where it shouldn’t be
Marine-specific, time-critical, and expensive if left. Seawater in an engine does damage by the hour, not by the month.

Smoke
- Black smoke — too much fuel for the available air, or an overloaded engine.
- White smoke — unburnt fuel, or water in a cylinder.
- Blue smoke — burning oil.
- Black soot on the transom
Fuel
The tank is the problem far more often than the engine.

Some faults are characteristic of a particular engine rather than marine diesels generally — a known exhaust elbow design, a known aftercooler, a known saildrive seal.
A note on diagnosis
Marine faults chain together in a way that misleads. A partly blocked raw water strainer reduces flow, which raises exhaust temperature, which cooks the exhaust hose and accelerates elbow corrosion, which eventually blocks and backs water into a cylinder. Four symptoms, one root cause, and only one of them cheap to fix if caught early.

Frequently asked questions
Can I keep motoring with an alarm sounding? Not for an overheat or oil pressure alarm. Both cause damage measured in minutes. Reduce load, shut down, and diagnose.
Why do so many marine problems come back to the raw water system? Because seawater is corrosive, carries debris, and passes through rubber, brass and cast iron on its way through your engine. It is the system doing the hardest job with the least attention.
