What Marine Engine Work Costs in Australia

Every price on this site is a range collected from Australian marine workshops, dated, and split into parts and labour. We tell you what the number assumes, because a marine quote without its assumptions is close to meaningless — the same nominal job varies by a factor of several depending on access.

Data collection in progress. Price ranges are being sourced from marine workshops across the ten locations on this site. Figures publish only once a service has a documented sample, and each page carries its own “prices current as at” date.

What drives a marine engine bill

Access, more than anything else. The same impeller change is thirty minutes on an open sterndrive installation and half a day on an engine boxed under a saloon floor with a bulkhead in front of it. When you get a quote, the first question a good mechanic asks is what the boat is — that is why.

Where the work happens. At the berth, on a mooring by tender, on the water under way, or hauled out on the hard. Each step up adds cost, and haul-out is charged separately from the engine work.

Marine specification parts. A marine alternator, starter or heat exchanger is built for salt and vibration and priced accordingly. Fitting the automotive equivalent is a false economy that usually fails within a season.

What else gets found. Marine faults cluster. An overheat that cooked the exhaust hose means the hose too. A failed impeller means finding every fragment downstream in the heat exchanger.

Downtime, for commercial operators. For a charter or survey vessel the labour rate is rarely the dominant cost. Availability is.

How to read a marine quote

A complete quote separates:

  • Parts, itemised, with the brand or grade stated
  • Labour, as hours at a stated rate — not a lump sum
  • Attendance: travel, dock access, tender or on-water time
  • Haul-out, if required, usually a separate line and often a separate supplier
  • Consumables — oils, filters, impellers, gaskets, anodes
  • The authorisation threshold above which they must call you

A single-number marine quote hides which of those is inflated, and access is where the surprises live.

Questions to ask a marine workshop

When the cheap quote is the expensive one

The recurring pattern in marine work is a symptom treated instead of a cause. A new impeller fitted without recovering the old one’s fragments from the heat exchanger. An overheat cured by replacing a thermostat when the exhaust elbow was blocking. A gearbox topped up rather than its cooler inspected.

The diagnostic hour is the cheapest hour on a marine invoice.

Is it worth fixing?

At some point a rebuild competes with a repower — and a repower is never just an engine. It involves beds, mounts, controls, instruments, shaft alignment and sometimes the exhaust system.

Frequently asked questions

What do marine mechanics charge per hour in Australia? Rates run above automotive, and vary by location and by whether attendance is at a berth, on a mooring or on the water. Each location page carries the local band.

Why is my quote so much higher than the range here? Usually access. A range assumes reasonable engine bay access; a boxed-in engine under a saloon sole can multiply the labour. Ask for the hours to be itemised.

Is haul-out included in these prices? No. Slipway and haul-out are quoted separately, often by a different supplier.

Do I pay for diagnosis if I don’t proceed? Yes — diagnostic time is work performed. Many operators credit it against the repair if you go ahead. Confirm at booking.

Are these prices GST inclusive? Yes, unless a page says otherwise.
