Sterndrive and Outdrive Service in Australia
A sterndrive puts the engine inside the hull and the drive unit outside the transom. It is compact and efficient, and it introduces a set of wear items that shaft-drive boats simply do not have — most of which sit below the waterline and fail expensively when neglected.

The wear items
Bellows. Rubber boots sealing the drive shaft, exhaust and shift cable openings through the transom. They perish with age, UV and ozone, and when the drive bellows splits, water enters the boat. This is the highest-consequence item on a sterndrive, and it is age-based rather than use-based.
Most manufacturers specify a replacement interval — commonly a small number of years. Boats routinely exceed it, because nothing appears wrong right up until water is coming in. → Sterndrive bellows failure
Gimbal bearing. Supports the drive shaft where it passes through the transom. Fails from water ingress past a failed bellows, and rumbles or squeals.
U-joints. Wear and corrode; a failed U-joint can leave you without drive.
Drive oil and seals. Milky drive oil means water is entering past a seal — act on it, because seawater in a gear case destroys bearings quickly.
Anodes. Sterndrives carry several, and they waste faster than hull anodes. → Anode inspection and replacement
Shift cable and mechanism, which fail progressively and cause hard shifting.
Trim system. Rams, hoses and the pump; leaks and corrosion are common.

The pattern that costs owners the most
A perished bellows lets water into the gimbal housing. The gimbal bearing corrodes and fails. Its failure damages the drive shaft and U-joints. What began as an inexpensive rubber part becomes a drive rebuild — and in the worst case a boat taking on water at the berth.
Replace bellows on time. It is the clearest example on this site of cheap prevention against expensive failure.
