Sacrificial Anode Inspection and Replacement in Australia

Put two dissimilar metals in seawater and connect them, and you have made a battery. One corrodes to protect the other. Sacrificial anodes are deliberately made of a metal that loses that contest — zinc, aluminium or magnesium — so that your engine, heat exchanger, gearbox and drive leg do not.

When the anodes are gone, the corrosion does not stop. It simply moves to the next most reactive thing, and that is your equipment.

Why sacrificial anodes matter

The anodes people forget

Hull and drive anodes are visible and usually get changed. The engine’s internal anodes are not visible, and are routinely neglected for the life of a boat:

  • Heat exchanger pencil anode — threaded into the housing
  • Aftercooler anode on many turbocharged engines
  • Oil cooler and gearbox cooler anodes on some installations
  • Exhaust elbow area on some designs

A boat with immaculate hull anodes and an untouched heat exchanger anode is common, and the heat exchanger is the thing quietly dissolving.

Choosing the right metal

The alloy matters and it depends on the water:

  • Zinc — traditional for salt water
  • Aluminium — works in salt and brackish water, and is now widely used
  • Magnesium — fresh water only; it wastes very rapidly in salt

Fitting the wrong alloy for your water either wastes money or, worse, provides no protection. A boat that moves between salt and fresh water — up a river system, for instance — needs this considered rather than assumed.

How fast should they waste?

There is no universal answer, and the rate itself is diagnostic. Anodes wasting unusually fast indicate a problem: stray current from a wiring fault, galvanic interaction with neighbouring boats through shore power, or an incorrectly bonded fitting. Warm tropical water also accelerates the process legitimately.

If your anodes are disappearing much faster than they used to, the anodes are telling you something. Investigate rather than just fitting more.

  • Ensure clean metal-to-metal contact — paint or corrosion on the mating face means the anode is decorative
  • Never paint an anode
  • Check the internal engine anodes, not just the hull and drive
  • Record what was replaced and when

How often should anodes be replaced? When roughly half consumed. That interval varies enormously with water temperature, salinity, shore power and how the boat is used.

Does my engine have anodes inside it? Very likely — a pencil anode in the heat exchanger at minimum, plus possibly the aftercooler and coolers. These are the ones owners most often never check.

Zinc or aluminium? Aluminium is now widely used in salt and brackish water; zinc remains common in salt. Magnesium is for fresh water only and wastes rapidly in salt.

Why are my anodes disappearing so fast? Stray current, a bonding fault, galvanic interaction through shore power, or simply warm tropical water. A sudden change in rate is worth investigating.

Can I paint over anodes when antifouling? No. A painted anode provides no protection at all.
