Diesel Bug Treatment and Removal in Australia
“Diesel bug” is microbial contamination — bacteria, yeasts and fungi living in the fuel tank. They live at the boundary between the diesel and any water that has accumulated beneath it, feeding on the fuel and using the water to survive.
It is a marine problem far more than a road problem, for one reason: boats have large tanks that sit part-full for months in humid conditions, which is precisely the environment the organisms need.
What it actually does
Blocks filters. The organisms form a mat and produce sludge that blocks primary and secondary filters, often suddenly and usually under load.
Corrodes the tank. The by-products are acidic. Established growth attacks aluminium and steel tanks from inside.
Damages injection equipment. What gets past the filters is abrasive and acidic, going into a system with microscopic clearances.
Comes back. This is the part owners underestimate. If you kill the organisms but leave the dead biomass and the water in the tank, you have left both the food and the habitat for the next colony.
Symptoms
- Filters blocking repeatedly, particularly in rough conditions
- Dark slime, jelly or stringy material in the filter bowl or on the element
- Loss of power under load, clearing at idle
- Water in the separator
- A sour or sulphurous smell from the tank

Treatment done properly
1. Confirm it. Sample the tank bottom. Test kits exist and are worth using — several other faults produce similar filter blocking.
2. Remove the water. Without water the organisms cannot live. This is the step that determines whether the problem returns.
3. Kill the growth with a biocide. Use a marine-specific product at the correct shock dose, and follow the contact time. Underdosing selects for resistant organisms rather than killing them.
4. Remove the dead biomass. Killing the colony converts it into a large quantity of sludge that then blocks your filters. This is why boats frequently have worse filter problems immediately after treatment. 5. Replace all filters, primary and secondary.
6. Address why water got in. A poorly sealing deck fill, a failed tank vent, condensation from long part-full storage, or contaminated fuel at the supplier. Without this the cycle restarts.
Prevention
- Keep tanks as full as practical during layup
- Drain the water separator routinely
- Use a maintenance dose of biocide where the boat sits for long periods
- Check the deck fill seal and the tank vent
- Buy fuel from high-turnover suppliers
What it costs
Treatment alone is inexpensive. Treatment plus polishing or tank cleaning — which is what an established case needs — is not.

Will a biocide alone fix it? It kills the organisms but leaves the dead biomass and the water. Both need removing or the problem returns — and the dead material itself blocks filters.
