Marine Fuel Pump Repair in Australia

Two pumps matter on a marine diesel. The lift pump draws fuel from the tank through the filters at low pressure. The injection pump — mechanical on older engines, high-pressure common rail on newer ones — delivers it to the injectors at working pressure.

Both are lubricated by the fuel passing through them, which is why fuel quality determines their life almost entirely.

Symptoms

  • Hard starting, or extended cranking before firing
  • Loss of power at high load, where demand exceeds delivery
  • Failure to reach rated RPM
  • Rough running and uneven fuelling
  • A no-start, on total failure
  • Metal particles in the fuel filter — the serious one

Check the cheap things first

Before a pump is condemned, these produce the same symptoms:

  • Blocked filters — the most common cause of exactly these symptoms on a boat
  • An air leak on the suction side — a perished separator bowl seal or loose fitting. Cheap, common, and regularly misdiagnosed as a pump.
  • A collapsing suction hose, which fails only at high demand
  • A blocked tank pickup or vent — a blocked vent creates a vacuum in the tank that starves the engine progressively as the trip goes on

That last one is a very marine failure and it fools people, because it clears when you open the filler cap.

The catastrophic failure

When a high-pressure pump fails internally it can shed metal into the fuel system, and those particles travel downstream into the rail, injectors and lines. At that point the job is the pump, the injectors, the rail, the lines and a full system flush — because leaving any contaminated component destroys the new pump.

A workshop that finds metal in the filter and quotes a much larger job than you expected is not padding the invoice.

Rebuild or replace

Mechanical injection pumps are frequently rebuildable by a diesel injection specialist, stripped, re-shimmed and calibrated on a bench with a test certificate. This is genuine, well-established work and often much cheaper than new.

Modern high-pressure common rail pumps are more commonly replaced, because the tolerances and test equipment narrow the field of who can properly rebuild them.

Ask for the calibration data either way.

The cause is the fuel

Water strips the lubricating film; particulate abrades. Replacing a pump without addressing the tank means replacing it again.

Frequently asked questions

My engine dies after an hour and then restarts — what is that? Classic blocked tank vent. A vacuum builds as fuel is drawn out, starving the engine; opening the filler releases it. Check the vent before anything expensive.

Why is the quote so much more than the price of a pump? Because a pump that shed metal contaminated the injectors, rail and lines. Replacing only the pump on a contaminated system fails again quickly.

Can a marine injection pump be rebuilt? Mechanical pumps very often can, by a diesel injection specialist with a calibration bench. Ask for the test certificate.

How do I stop it happening again? Address the tank. Water and particulate are what killed it, and they are still there after the pump is replaced.
