On a boat, the fuel tank is a far more common source of engine trouble than the engine. Diesel sits in it for months, absorbs water, grows microbial contamination at the fuel-water interface, and deposits sludge that stays undisturbed until the first rough passage stirs it up and sends it to your filters.

Polishing versus cleaning
They are not the same thing and the distinction matters when comparing quotes.
Fuel polishing circulates the fuel through filtration and water separation, progressively removing water and particulate. It cleans the fuel. It does not remove sludge adhered to the tank walls and baffles.
Tank cleaning means opening the tank through its inspection ports and physically removing sludge, growth and sediment from the surfaces. It is more invasive, more expensive, and the only way to deal with a genuinely contaminated tank.
Polishing a tank with heavy wall growth gives a temporary result — the fuel is clean until the next rough passage releases more sludge. For light contamination polishing is appropriate; for an established problem it is not enough on its own.

What a proper job includes
- Sampling the fuel and the tank bottom first, so the scope is based on evidence
- Water removal from the tank bottom
- Filtration to a specified micron rating, with multiple passes
- Tank inspection through access ports where fitted
- Physical cleaning of walls and baffles where contamination warrants it
- Biocide treatment where microbial growth is present
- New primary and secondary filters afterwards — non-negotiable
- Advice on the tank’s own shortcomings: no inspection port, no water drain, or a pickup that sits too low
Prevention
- Keep tanks full rather than part-full over long layups. Air space means condensation, and condensation means water, and water means growth.
- Drain the water separator routinely and act on the first water you see
- Buy fuel from suppliers with high turnover
- Treat fuel for long storage
- Fit an inspection port if your tank lacks one — it turns an impossible job into a routine one

How do I know if my fuel is contaminated? Take a sample from the tank bottom. Dark sludge, a jelly-like layer, or free water settling out are all clear indicators — and cheaper to find deliberately than during a passage.
Is polishing enough, or do I need the tank cleaned? Polishing handles the fuel; cleaning handles the tank. If there is established growth on the walls and baffles, polishing alone gives a temporary result.
