Information disclaimer
This site provides general educational information about marine diesel engines. It is not a diagnosis, a repair instruction for your particular vessel, or a substitute for inspection by a qualified marine professional.
The advice can be wrong
Information on this site can be incomplete, out of date, misunderstood or simply wrong. Engines with similar symptoms can have different faults. Model changes, previous repairs, non-standard installations and the condition of your vessel can make a generally sensible step unsafe in your case.
Never use this site as the only basis for a decision involving fire, flooding, fuel, electrical isolation, loss of propulsion or safety at sea.
Stop when safety is uncertain
Shut the engine down when a guide says to do so, when an alarm sounds, when cooling water stops, or whenever continued operation may cause harm. If you are underway, put the safety of the people and vessel first and follow your emergency procedures. Contact the appropriate emergency or marine rescue service where necessary.
Use the correct manufacturer information
The operator, workshop and installation manuals for your exact engine, gearbox and vessel take priority over a general article. Confirm the model, serial number and installation before ordering parts, selecting fluids, applying torque values or opening a fuel, cooling or electrical system. Our authority resources page explains where to find primary sources.
No professional relationship
Reading this site or contacting us does not create a mechanic–customer, engineer–client, surveyor–client or other professional relationship. We do not inspect your vessel, verify the facts you provide or supervise work.
Prices, listings and external links
Costs are indicative and may change. Business listings are not endorsements, and you must confirm licences, insurance, experience and availability directly. External sites can change without notice and remain responsible for their own information.

If you find an error, please tell us. Include the page address, the statement in question and, where possible, a primary source such as a current manufacturer manual or government publication.
