Buy a marine diesel engine in Australia

We do not sell engines. This section exists because “buy a marine diesel engine” is a decision most owners make once or twice in a lifetime, usually under time pressure, and usually with far less information than the amount of money involved deserves.

What follows is what to work out before you contact anyone, and then a page for each major boating region in Australia covering what that market is actually like — because buying an engine in Broome and buying one on the Gold Coast are not the same exercise.

Four ways to buy

New, through a dealer. Full warranty, current emissions certification, factory support and diagnostics. The dealer network is the constraint: some brands have depth in every capital and some do not.

Remanufactured on exchange. You buy a factory-reconditioned unit and return your old engine as the core. Often the best value on an older but well-supported engine where the rest of the installation is sound.

Independent rebuild or reconditioned unit. Quality varies enormously with the workshop. Ask for the specification in writing — what was measured, machined and replaced.

Used. Sensible as a core or as a parts source. As a running engine it is a gamble without real history and an inspection.

The engine is not the whole cost

This is the single most common shock. A repower quote includes removal, engine beds, alignment, exhaust, wiring, instruments, controls, cooling plumbing, often the gearbox and often the propeller — and on many boats that work exceeds the price of the engine.

What to establish before you call anyone

1. Power required, from the naval architect’s figure or the original specification — not from what the neighbouring boat has.
2. Physical envelope. Height, length, width, and the route the engine takes in and out of the boat.
3. Gearbox and reduction ratio, and whether the existing propeller still suits.
4. Duty rating. Manufacturers rate engines for recreational, light commercial or continuous duty. Using an engine outside its rating affects warranty and, in survey, compliance.
5. Whether the vessel is or may become a commercial vessel, which changes the requirements — see engine requirements for survey.
6. Local service and parts support for the brand where you keep the boat. This matters more the further you are from a capital.

Support beats specification

The brand with the best figures on paper is the wrong choice if the nearest technician with its diagnostic tool is a thousand kilometres away.

For a boat that stays in a capital city, almost any major brand is well supported. For a boat based in the Kimberley, on the Gulf, or working remote sections of the Queensland coast, parts availability and who can plug into the engine are the deciding factors — not fuel curves.
