Buy a marine diesel engine in the Gippsland Lakes

The Gippsland Lakes are the largest inland navigable waterway in Australia, and they are the one Australian boating region where the water itself is often not salt. That changes something most owners never think about: anode alloy.

What the local market looks like

Paynesville is the recreational centre, with marina, slipway and a service trade built around a substantial cruising and sailing fleet.

Lakes Entrance is the commercial fishing port and the only way in and out of the lakes system from Bass Strait, with the engineering that a working fleet requires.

Metung, Bairnsdale and Sale add capacity around the system.

What local conditions do to the choice

Shallow water. Much of the system is skinny, which means intakes closer to the bottom and more suspended material.

Cold water and a real layup season. Gippsland winters are cold. Layup deterioration is the main risk for lightly used engines here.

Long, easy running. Boats inside the lakes do a lot of low-load cruising in flat water, which is exactly the pattern that glazes bores. Being honest about that when sizing an engine is worthwhile.
