Marine diesel in the Gippsland Lakes
Australia’s largest inland navigable waterway, and the only significant boating region in the country where the water is often not salt. That one fact changes a maintenance decision most owners never think about.
The anode problem nobody warns you about
Salinity across the lakes varies enormously — fresher at the western end and up the rivers, brackish through the middle, close to sea water near the Entrance. It also shifts with rainfall and with the state of the Entrance itself.
That matters because anode alloy is chosen for an electrolyte:
- Magnesium is fresh water only and wastes very rapidly in salt
- Zinc performs poorly in fresh water, becoming passivated and protecting nothing
- Aluminium works across a wider range and is usually the answer for a boat that moves between them
A boat kept at Paynesville that runs down to the Entrance regularly is moving through a changing electrolyte all season. Have the alloy chosen deliberately rather than fitted by default.
What else breaks here
Weed and silt in the raw water. The lakes carry weed, and the rivers feeding them carry silt. Strainers clog, and a strainer you can clear quickly and safely is worth having.
Shallow water. Much of the system is skinny, which puts intakes closer to the bottom and more suspended material through them.
Bore glazing from easy running. Boats inside the lakes do a great deal of low-load cruising in flat water, which is precisely the pattern that glazes bores and builds carbon. It is worth running the engine up under real load deliberately.
Layup. Gippsland winters are cold and the fleet sits.
The trade
Paynesville is the recreational centre, with marina, slipway and a service trade built around a large cruising and sailing fleet that lives on the water year-round.
Lakes Entrance is the commercial fishing port and the only way in and out of the system from Bass Strait, with the engineering a working fleet requires.
Metung, Bairnsdale and Sale add capacity around the system.
Local capability for servicing, repowers and slipping is genuinely good for a regional area, because the fleet is large. Melbourne is three to four hours away for anything unusual.
Two different boats
A boat that crosses the Entrance and a boat that never leaves the lakes should not be maintained the same way. The Entrance is a working bar, and it demands power margin, reliable fuel delivery under motion, and cooling that copes with sustained load at low boat speed. A lakes-only boat has a far gentler life.
