Marine diesel in Geelong

Geelong is Port Phillip’s western market, and it has something Melbourne does not: industrial engineering capacity of its own, an hour from the city’s dealer network.

What breaks here

Layup damage, as across Port Phillip. The season is real and the fleet sits from about May. Oil, fuel, coolant and impellers all deteriorate on the calendar, and a low-hour Geelong boat needs the same scepticism as a low-hour Melbourne one.

Inner Corio Bay silt. The upper bay is shallow and, in places, silty. Raw water circuits here pick up more than they do in the deeper parts of Port Phillip, so strainers clog and heat exchangers foul faster than a bay-wide average suggests.

Cold starting. Same as Melbourne — battery capacity, glow systems and oil grade matter, and the first start of the season is diagnostic.

Heads damage. Boats out of Queenscliff and Portarlington are minutes from Port Phillip Heads, which is one of the more demanding entrances in the country. Engines chosen at the bottom of their design range work hardest exactly there.

The trade

The fleet sits around Corio Bay — the waterfront marinas and Royal Geelong, St Helens, and the Bellarine harbours at Portarlington and Queenscliff.

Behind it is Geelong’s long industrial engineering tradition: machining, fabrication and diesel work at a scale most regional boating towns cannot match. For a rebuild, that means components do not have to travel.

Yard time is the local advantage. Hardstand and slipway capacity here is easier to obtain and generally cheaper than across the bay, which is why some Melbourne boats come west for major work.

Melbourne is an hour away for dealer breadth and parts, so sourcing is rarely the constraint.

Booking

Winter, as across Port Phillip. The fleet is laid up, yards have capacity, and work done then costs you no season.

Frequently asked questions

Is Geelong cheaper than Melbourne for engine work? Yard and hardstand time is generally easier to get and less expensive. Compare the whole job rather than the labour rate.

Why do my strainers clog in Corio Bay? The inner bay is shallow and silty. Raw water circuits work harder here than in the deeper parts of Port Phillip.

Can a rebuild be done locally? Yes. Geelong’s industrial engineering means machining does not have to travel, which shortens the slowest part of a rebuild.

When should I book? Winter. The fleet is laid up and yards have room.

What do I need for going outside the Heads? Power margin and serious fuel filtration. The Heads punish an engine chosen at the bottom of its range.
