How to replace marine engine anodes

Close the seacock, unscrew the anode from its housing, clean the threads and the mating face to bare metal, fit the new anode with thread sealant, and open the seacock. The job takes minutes. Finding all the anodes is the hard part — most engines have one inside the heat exchanger that owners have never seen.

An anode is a metal chosen to corrode so that your propeller, shaft and heat exchanger tubes do not. Replace at about half consumed, not when gone — see why anodes matter.

Find them all first

Hull and drive anodes get changed at antifouling. These are the ones that do not:

  • The heat exchanger pencil anode, threaded into the housing. This is the one that matters most and the one most often never replaced.
  • The aftercooler anode on many turbocharged engines
  • Oil cooler and gearbox cooler anodes on some installations

A boat with immaculate hull anodes and an untouched heat exchanger anode is extremely common, and the heat exchanger is the thing quietly dissolving.

The procedure

  1. Close the raw water seacock and confirm it is shut. Opening a cooler housing below the waterline without doing this floods the boat.
  2. Let the engine cool completely. Coolers hold hot water and can hold pressure.
  3. Place a container under the housing. Some water will escape.
  4. Unscrew the anode. It is usually a brass plug with the zinc or aluminium element on the inside end. An anode that has never been changed will be seized — use penetrating fluid and patience rather than force.
  5. Inspect what comes out. If the element has completely gone and only the plug remains, the circuit has been unprotected for some time and the tube bundle should be inspected.
  6. Retrieve any broken fragments from inside the housing. A loose piece can block a tube.
  7. Clean the threads and the mating face to bright metal. Corrosion or old sealant between the anode and the housing insulates it, and an insulated anode protects nothing while looking perfectly healthy.
  8. Fit the new anode with a thread sealant suitable for the application. Do not overtighten a brass plug into an alloy housing.
  9. Open the seacock, start the engine, and check for leaks around the housing.

This matters in places where the water changes — the Gippsland Lakes, the Swan River and Mandurah among them. A passivated zinc in brackish water lasts a long time and protects nothing.

If they are disappearing faster than they used to

A change in wastage rate is diagnostic, not a reason to fit more:

  • Stray current from a wiring fault — fast enough to consume a propeller in a season
  • Galvanic interaction through shore power, sometimes from a neighbouring boat
  • The wrong alloy for the water you are now in
  • Warmer water — a move north legitimately consumes anodes faster

When to stop

Stop if the anode plug shears, if the housing threads are damaged, or if the element has gone completely and you cannot account for the fragments.

Frequently asked questions

How often should marine engine anodes be replaced? At about half consumed. How long that takes varies with water temperature, salinity, shore power and use.

Does my engine have anodes inside it? Very likely — a pencil anode in the heat exchanger at minimum. It is the most commonly neglected item on a marine engine.

Why do I have to clean the mating face? An anode only works if it is electrically connected to what it protects. Corrosion or sealant between the two insulates it.

Can I paint over anodes? No. A painted anode provides no protection at all.

Why are mine disappearing faster this year? Something changed — a wiring fault, a new neighbour on shore power, a different berth, or warmer water. Investigate rather than fitting more.
