Two waters, and the anode question

Mandurah’s boats live in the Peel-Harvey estuary, the canal developments, or on the ocean side — and those are genuinely different electrolytes.

The estuary is brackish and variable, changing with rainfall, river inflow and the state of the entrance. The ocean side is full salinity. A boat that moves between them, which many do, sits in a shifting environment.

That makes anode alloy a decision rather than a default:

  • Magnesium is fresh water only and wastes very fast in salt
  • Zinc performs poorly in brackish and fresh, becoming passivated
  • Aluminium works across a wider range and usually suits a boat that moves

Shallow, warm estuary water

The estuary is shallow and warm, which is an easier cooling environment than the tropics but harder than the open ocean. It also carries more suspended material than the ocean side, so strainers and heat exchangers need attention on a shorter cycle for an estuary-berthed boat than an ocean-berthed one.

Canal running is light loading

The same pattern as every canal estate: slow runs through the system, a period at anchor or offshore, slow runs back. Prolonged light loading glazes bores and builds carbon.

Boats that go out through the entrance and work offshore have a healthier engine life than boats that never leave the canals, and the owners of the latter should run their engines up deliberately.

The entrance

Mandurah’s ocean access opens to the Indian Ocean, and the same rules apply as at Fremantle and Hillarys: the sea breeze builds, the tank gets stirred, and power margin and fuel filtration matter.
