Muddy water and big tides
Western Port is shallow, heavily tidal and considerably muddier than Port Phillip. Large intertidal mudflats mean the water column carries fine sediment, and the tidal range moves a great deal of it.

Tidal streams are real. Boats work against genuine current, which is a load consideration and affects both fuel burn and running temperature.

An industrial port with a recreational fleet
Western Port carries commercial shipping and industrial facilities alongside the recreational fleet, which has two implications.
Engineering capability exists locally at a level a purely recreational port would not sustain.
Shore power infrastructure in an industrial setting raises the possibility of stray current — corrosion driven by an electrical fault rather than ordinary galvanic action, and fast enough to matter. A change in anode wastage rate is the signal to investigate rather than to fit more.
Cold water, long layup
Everything true of Port Phillip’s season applies here. The fleet sits from about May, and time-based deterioration — oil, fuel, impellers, coolant — is the dominant risk rather than wear.
Cold starting is the local symptom: battery capacity, glow arrangements and oil grade all matter, and the first start of the season is diagnostic.
Going outside
Western Port’s entrances open to Bass Strait, which is serious water. Power margin and fuel filtration are not refinements for a boat that goes out.
