How to change marine engine oil and filter

Run the engine to operating temperature, extract the oil through the dipstick tube with a suction pump, change the filter, refill to the correct level, then run and recheck. Almost no marine engine has a usable drain plug, so suction through the dipstick tube is the normal method rather than a compromise.

Do this by the calendar as well as by the hours. Oil degrades by acid formation and moisture absorption whether the engine runs or not, which is why a boat doing thirty hours a year still needs an annual change.

Before you start

  • Warm the engine to full operating temperature and then stop it. Warm oil flows and carries suspended contaminants out with it; cold oil leaves them in the sump.
  • Have the right oil and the right quantity. Marine specifications differ from automotive; the manual is the authority.
  • Have a container large enough, and a plan for disposal. Waste oil goes to a marina facility or a licensed collector, never overboard or into a stormwater drain.
  • Rags, and more rags. Oil in the bilge is a pollution problem and a slip hazard.

The procedure

  1. Run to operating temperature, then stop the engine.
  2. Withdraw the dipstick and insert the suction pump tube to the bottom of the sump.
  3. Pump the old oil out into your container. Keep going until it stops drawing — an incomplete extraction leaves acidic oil behind and defeats the point.
  4. Measure roughly what came out against what should be there. Much less means you have been losing it somewhere; much more means something is getting in.
  5. Position a bag or rag under the oil filter — it will spill whatever you do, and on many marine installations it spills onto something awkward.
  6. Remove the filter with a strap wrench. Check the old sealing ring came away with it; a doubled-up ring is a guaranteed leak.
  7. Smear clean oil on the new filter’s sealing ring, fit it, and tighten by hand to the amount printed on the filter. Do not use the wrench to tighten.
  8. Refill with the specified oil, slightly under the full mark to start.
  9. Start the engine and run at idle. Watch oil pressure come up promptly, and check the filter and drain area for leaks.
  10. Stop, wait a few minutes for the oil to drain back, and recheck the level. Top up to the mark.
  11. Record the date and hours. Both matter.

Read the old oil

Before you dispose of it, look at what came out:

  • Milky or creamy — water. Coolant through a head gasket, or seawater through a cooler. Investigate before running further.
  • Smells strongly of diesel — fuel dilution, usually from injector or injection pump problems, or prolonged light-load running.
  • Very black on a low-hour engine — normal for a diesel, but worth noting alongside consumption.
  • Gritty or with glitter — wear metal. An oil analysis is worth the money.

An oil analysis on the sample is inexpensive and frequently decisive, especially before a purchase or a major decision.
