How to check and change marine gearbox oil
Check the dipstick or sight glass with the engine stopped and the boat level, look at the oil’s colour before anything else, and use the exact fluid the gearbox plate specifies — which is frequently not engine oil. A marine gearbox is on its own schedule with its own oil, and it is the item most often left out of an engine service.
Ask explicitly whether the gearbox is included in a service quote. It usually is not.
Read the oil before you drain it
The condition tells you more than the change does:

Milky gearbox oil is not a “change it and see” situation. The gearbox oil cooler frequently sits in the raw water circuit, and when it corrodes it lets seawater in. The cooler needs replacing, not flushing, and running the box on emulsified oil damages the clutch packs.
Getting the fluid right
Marine gearboxes take different fluids depending on make and model — some take automatic transmission fluid, some take engine oil of a specified grade. Using the wrong one causes clutch problems that look like mechanical failure.

The procedure
- Run the engine briefly to warm the oil, then stop it. Warm oil drains more completely and carries contaminants with it.
- Check the level first, on the level, with the engine stopped, following the dipstick’s own instruction — some are read screwed in, some resting.
- Note the condition before you drain.
- Extract the old oil. Most marine gearboxes have no drain plug in a usable position, so a suction pump through the dipstick tube is the normal method.
- Measure what came out. Significantly more than specification means something is getting in.
- Refill with the specified fluid to the correct level. Do not overfill — gearboxes are sensitive to it.
- Run the engine, engage ahead and astern briefly, stop, and recheck the level.
- Check for leaks around the dipstick and any cooler connections.
What the behaviour tells you
Slow engagement — low oil, a control cable short of full travel, an idle too low to build pressure, or worn clutch packs. Cable adjustment is the cheapest thing to rule out.
Slipping under load — clutch wear, or oil degraded by heat.
Noise that changes with gear selection — internal wear, and a reason to stop rather than investigate at sea.
