How to identify your marine engine
Find the manufacturer’s plate on the engine block — usually on the rocker cover, the side of the block or the flywheel housing — and record the model and serial number exactly as written. Every parts supplier and every workshop will ask for that serial number, and without it you are guessing.
Do not work from the boat’s brochure, the previous owner’s word, or what the hull’s model year suggests. Builders changed engine suppliers between model years, offered options, and Australian-delivered boats often differ from those sold elsewhere.
The procedure
- Look for a metal plate or a stamped area on the engine itself. Common locations are the rocker cover, the side of the block near the injection pump, and the flywheel housing.
- Clean it. Decades of oil film and salt make plates unreadable, and a rag with degreaser usually brings the numbers back.
- Photograph it before you do anything else. Plates corrode and photographs do not.
- Record the model designation and the serial number separately. Some manufacturers use both; the serial is what identifies your specific engine and its build specification.
- Look for a separate plate on the gearbox. It is a different manufacturer with a different serial and a different oil specification, and it is the number people most often fail to collect.
- Record the reduction ratio from the gearbox plate if it is shown. It matters for propeller questions.
- Note anything else with a plate: turbocharger, heat exchanger, injection pump, alternator, generator.
- Keep all of it with the boat’s papers, and keep a copy off the boat.
If the plate is missing or unreadable
This is common on older engines. Options, roughly in order of reliability:
- Casting numbers on the block, which a specialist for that brand can often interpret
- The injection pump plate, which carries its own identification
- Distinctive features — cylinder count, head configuration, cooling arrangement — photographed and shown to a workshop that knows the family
- The boat’s original documentation, if it exists and is trustworthy
A marinised industrial engine — many Beta, Nanni, Solé and Vetus units are Kubota-based — has two identities: the marinizer’s model and the underlying base engine. Why this matters more than owners expect
Parts. The same model can have running changes mid-production. A serial number resolves which version you have.
Diagnostics. Electronic engines need the right software for the specific family.
Duty rating. The plate often carries the rating the engine was built to, which matters for warranty and, in survey, for compliance.
Resale. A buyer who cannot identify the engine discounts for the uncertainty.
