Engine Alignment and Coupling in Australia
Engine alignment means setting the engine and gearbox output so that the coupling faces meet the propeller shaft squarely, within a tolerance measured in thousandths of an inch. It is invisible, easy to neglect, and quietly responsible for a great deal of expensive wear.
What misalignment destroys

The detail people miss: it must be done afloat
A hull is not rigid. It changes shape between being supported on a hard stand and floating on its lines. An alignment set on the hard is not the alignment the boat has in the water.
Correct practice is to align with the boat afloat, and after it has been back in the water long enough to settle — commonly a day or more, and longer for timber hulls, which take up. Doing it immediately on relaunch gives a result that drifts.

Engine mounts
Flexible mounts compress, harden and sag with age, and sagging mounts pull the engine out of alignment gradually. On any older boat, mount condition should be assessed as part of an alignment — realigning on tired mounts is temporary.

Can alignment be done on the hard? It should not be finalised there. Hull shape changes between the hard stand and the water, so alignment is set afloat once the boat has settled.
What are the symptoms of misalignment? Vibration, a shaft seal that will not stop leaking, a cutless bearing wearing quickly, or repeated gearbox output seal failure.
My boat vibrates — is it the propeller or the alignment? Either, and it needs checking rather than guessing. A damaged or unbalanced prop and a misaligned shaft feel similar from the helm.
