How much does a marine engine rebuild cost in Australia
We do not publish invented figures. Rebuild pricing varies so widely by engine, by what the strip-down finds, and by where the boat is, that a made-up range would mislead more than it helps.
What this page does instead is show you exactly what drives the number, so that when you get quotes you can tell whether they are comparable.
What “rebuild” can mean
The word covers at least four different jobs, and quotes that look wildly different are often quoting different ones:
In-frame or top-end overhaul. Head off, engine stays in the boat. Valves, head gasket, sometimes pistons and liners where the design allows. The cheapest real option, and only viable where the bottom end is sound.
Out-of-frame overhaul. Engine removed, stripped completely, block machined, crankshaft ground or replaced, everything reassembled to specification. This is what most people mean by a rebuild.
Partial repair. One cylinder, one bearing, a head. Sometimes the right answer, sometimes a way of postponing the real one.
Exchange remanufactured unit. Not a rebuild of your engine at all — see our comparison of new and reconditioned engines.
Ask which one you are being quoted, in writing.
The cost drivers
Engine size and cylinder count. More cylinders means more parts, more machining, more labour, in a roughly linear way.
Parts availability and origin. A common engine with strong Australian support is a completely different proposition from one whose parts come from a single overseas supplier on a long lead time.
Access. Some boats need the engine lifted out through a hatch. Others need a bulkhead or part of the deck opened. Some need the boat hauled. This can be a significant fraction of the job and has nothing to do with the engine.
What the strip-down finds. A cracked block, a crankshaft beyond regrind limits, or a head that will not clean up changes the job. This is why an honest quote is an estimate with a call-back threshold.
Machining requirements. Boring, honing, line boring, crank grinding, head skimming and valve seat work are each separate operations at a machine shop.
Ancillaries. Injectors, injection pump, turbocharger, heat exchanger, raw water pump and starter are all things that can be tired at the same time. A quote may or may not include them.
Location. Labour rates and haul-out costs differ between capital city marinas and regional ports, and remote locations add travel and freight.
Gearbox. Usually excluded. Ask.
Getting comparable quotes
Ask every workshop for the same things:
- Which of the four jobs above they are quoting
- What is included in labour — removal, refit, sea trial?
- What machining is assumed, and what happens if more is needed
- Which ancillaries are included, and which are excluded
- Whether the gearbox is included
- A call-back threshold in dollars for additional work found
- Warranty terms — parts, labour, duration, transferability
- Lead time, and whether parts are in the country
A quote that answers all eight can be compared. One that says “engine rebuild” and a number cannot.
Before you commit
Get the condition assessment first — compression or leak-down, oil analysis, and an inspection of the surrounding systems. Then compare the rebuild against a repower with the deferred items added to the rebuild side. Our repower or rebuild guide walks through that comparison.
Frequently asked questions
Why won’t you publish a price range for a marine engine rebuild? Because the honest range spans an order of magnitude across engine sizes, access situations and locations, and a published number would be used as an anchor it does not deserve. We would rather you knew what to ask.
Is a rebuild cheaper than a repower? On the engine alone, usually. Once the surrounding systems and the installation work a repower includes are counted, the gap often narrows.
What is the biggest hidden cost? Access — getting the engine out and back in — and whatever the strip-down finds. Both should be addressed explicitly in the quote.
Does the gearbox get rebuilt at the same time? Not unless it is quoted. If it is close to needing work, doing it while the engine is out saves a second removal.
How long does a marine engine rebuild take? It is usually parts lead time rather than labour that sets the duration. Ask whether the parts are in Australia.
