When to rebuild, when to repower, what a reconditioned engine really is, and what saltwater ingress costs.

How do I know it's the head and not something cheaper?

You do not until the cooling system has been pressure tested and the coolant tested for combustion gas. On a boat those tests are essential before pulling a head — a perforated heat exchanger or oil cooler produces the same symptoms for much less money.

Can a corroded marine cylinder head be repaired?

Sometimes. Corrosion into the water jackets frequently ends it. Get that assessed before paying for machining.

Do head bolts need replacing?

On most modern marine diesels, yes — they are torque-to-yield.

Why did my head fail?

Overheating or water ingress, almost always. Both have causes that must be fixed or the repair does not last.

Rebuild or repower?

Rebuild keeps the beds, controls, shaft and instruments as they are, which is why it frequently wins on a boat even when a car owner would replace. Repower makes sense when the engine is obsolete, parts are unavailable, or you want modern efficiency and support.

Does the engine have to come out?

For a full rebuild, usually. How it comes out varies enormously between boats and is a real cost — establish it early.

How long does a marine rebuild take?

Commonly several weeks to a few months, driven by machining queues, parts and access.

Why did the price rise after they stripped it?

Because a pre-strip quote cannot know what is inside. A firm quote before stripping is a guess, and usually a low one.

How long will a rebuilt marine engine last?

Properly done with the original cause corrected, comparable to a new engine. The cause is the variable — an engine that failed from cooling neglect will fail again if the cooling is not fixed.

Is a reconditioned engine as good as a rebuild?

A properly remanufactured unit is comparable, with a warranty and much less downtime. The variable is the remanufacturer's standard — which is why the written specification matters.

Are exchange engines available for my boat?

For common marine diesels, usually. For less common engines, often not — in which case a rebuild is the path.

What is a core charge?

A deposit against returning your old engine, refunded when it comes back in acceptable condition. Ask what acceptable means — a block cracked by the failure may not qualify.

Does the warranty cover removal and refitting?

Frequently not, and on a boat that is a large sum. Ask specifically.

Do I need a new exhaust elbow as well?

Yes. Reusing a corroded elbow on a freshly reconditioned engine is one of the fastest ways to ruin it.

What is the most common marine engine repair in Australia?

Raw water cooling work — impellers, strainers, heat exchangers and exhaust elbows. It is the system doing the hardest job with the least attention.

Why do marine repairs cost more than automotive?

Access in a confined engine bay, marine-specification parts, and attendance at the boat rather than the boat coming to a workshop.

My boat has lost power — is it the engine?

Check the bottom and the propeller first. A fouled hull or a damaged prop produces the same complaint far more often than an engine fault does.

Is it worth repairing an old marine diesel?

More often than an old car engine, because the alternative — a repower — involves beds, controls, shaft, exhaust and instruments, not just an engine.

How much of a repower is the engine?

Frequently around half or less. Beds, exhaust, propeller, controls, instruments, alignment and commissioning make up the rest.

Should I fit a more powerful engine?

Usually not. A displacement hull has a speed limit set by its waterline, and excess power burns fuel without adding speed. Match the engine to the hull.

Will my existing gearbox and propeller carry over?

Sometimes, but the ratio and pitch must suit the new engine's power and RPM. A carried-over propeller is a common reason a repowered boat underperforms.

How long does a repower take?

Weeks to months depending on access, parts and yard availability.

Is repowering with the same brand cheaper?

Usually, because beds, controls, exhaust and instruments are more likely to fit.

Should I repower or rebuild?

Rebuild if the engine is well supported and the installation is sound. Repower if the engine is obsolete, parts are scarce, or you want modern efficiency.

Could it be something cheaper than a head gasket?

Frequently, on a boat. A perforated heat exchanger tube, a failed oil cooler, a corroded aftercooler or a failed pressure cap all produce similar symptoms for a fraction of the cost. Test before pulling a head.

Do head gasket sealants work?

They may slow a very small leak briefly, and they risk blocking heat exchanger tubes and coolant passages — which on a marine engine creates a worse problem than the one you started with.

Can I keep using the engine?

No. Coolant loss leads to overheating, and continued overheating turns a head gasket into a rebuild.

Why do quotes vary so much?

Access. On some boats the head comes off in a morning; on others the engine bay makes it a multi-day job.

My engine smokes and lacks power — is the turbo gone?

Check the exhaust elbow, the bottom and the propeller first. A blocked elbow produces these symptoms and is a far cheaper part.

Can a marine turbo be rebuilt?

Yes, where the housings are sound. Balancing is what makes a rebuild reliable — ask whether it is done.

Why did my turbo fail?

Most often oil supply — a carboned feed line, low pressure or extended intervals or exhaust back pressure from a blocked elbow.

Should I let the engine idle before shutting down?

After sustained hard running, yes. It lets oil carry heat out of the bearing housing instead of coking in it.

Does salt air affect the turbo?

Yes, particularly the compressor side. It is one reason marine turbos live harder lives than road ones.

My engine won't turn over — should I use a bigger battery?

No. An engine that will not turn may be hydrolocked, and forcing it bends rods. Find out why before applying more force.

How quickly do I need to act on seawater in the oil?

Immediately. Salt water corrodes bearings continuously while it sits. Hours matter.

Can an engine recover from ingesting seawater?

Frequently, if it was not cranked and was treated within a day. The same engine left a week is usually a rebuild.

Why does my engine keep taking water in?

Almost always the exhaust system — a corroded elbow, or an installation geometry that lets water back to the engine. The cause must be fixed or it recurs.

Should I keep cranking a marine engine that won't start?

No. On a raw-water-cooled engine, cranking pumps water through the exhaust and it can back up into the cylinders. Diagnose instead.
