How often should charter engines be serviced?

By hours, and tightly. Charter engines accumulate hours fast, and the schedule is driven by the meter rather than the calendar.

Why replace parts that still work?

Because a failed impeller mid-charter costs a booking, a recovery and a reputation. Scheduled replacement is far cheaper than the consequence.

What is the most common charter engine failure?

Overheating from a blocked strainer or a closed seacock — both caused by unfamiliar operators rather than by the engine.

When should major work be scheduled?

Outside peak season. In the Whitsundays and Cairns that means the wet season.

Does oil analysis make sense across a fleet?

Particularly so. Trending across vessels shows which need attention first and turns maintenance from reactive into planned.

Does my workshop need to be accredited to work on a survey vessel?

The requirements depend on your vessel's class and safety management system. Check what applies to you with AMSA or your surveyor rather than assuming.

What records should I keep?

Enough to demonstrate the maintenance regime in your SMS was followed — what was done, when, by whom, and to what specification. Ask your workshop for service reports rather than invoices.

Why do commercial operators replace parts before they fail?

Because a failure costs a day's revenue, a stranded charter, or a missed contract. Preventive replacement is cheaper than the consequence.

Is oil analysis worth it commercially?

It is close to standard practice, and it is the cheapest early warning available on a high-value engine.

How do I minimise downtime?

Held spares for your specific engines, a workshop that can attend at short notice, and planned maintenance windows scheduled around your season.

Is constant high load bad for a marine diesel?

No — it is what they are designed for, provided cooling and oil condition are maintained. Sustained load is easier on an engine than long idling.

My vessel idles for hours on standby — is that a problem?

Yes. Extended light-load running glazes bores, builds carbon and dilutes the oil. Periodic loading is maintenance.

Should I use an exchange engine rather than rebuild in place?

On a revenue vessel, usually. It takes the rebuild off the critical path and returns the vessel to service far sooner.

What condition monitoring is worth doing?

Oil analysis, exhaust temperature trending and fuel consumption per hour. All three give warning well ahead of an alarm.

What documentation should I get from my workshop?

Enough to satisfy your safety management system — what was done, when, by whom and to what specification, not just an invoice.

My yacht's engine does 30 hours a year — does it need annual servicing?

Yes. Almost everything that damages a lightly used auxiliary is time-based: fuel degradation, impeller set, coolant inhibitor depletion, anode consumption and perishing rubber.

How often does a saildrive diaphragm need replacing?

On the manufacturer's interval, measured in years. It is a safety item — its failure lets water into the boat — and it requires a haul-out.

Is it bad to only motor in and out of the marina?

Yes. Light-load running glazes bores and builds carbon. Running under genuine load periodically is maintenance.

My saildrive oil is milky — what does that mean?

Water has entered past a seal. Address it promptly.

My engine has an unfamiliar brand — can I get parts?

Very likely, through the base engine. Many yacht auxiliaries are Kubota blocks under another badge.
