Yacht Auxiliary Engine Service in Australia

A sailing yacht’s auxiliary spends most of its life switched off. It does 30 or 50 hours a year, mostly at low load motoring in and out of a mooring, and it is then expected to start reliably and push the boat to windward in bad weather when it really matters.

That duty cycle produces a distinct set of problems, and almost none of them are wear.

Why low hours is the problem

Fuel degrades in a tank that is emptied slowly and topped up rarely, and water accumulates through condensation. Microbial growth follows. → Diesel bug treatment

Anodes waste continuously while the boat floats, running or not.

Coolant inhibitors deplete on a calendar, and the engine corrodes internally.

Light-load running glazes bores and builds carbon. An auxiliary that only ever idles in and out of a berth never reaches proper operating temperature or load. Running it under genuine load periodically is maintenance, not wear.

Rubber perishes — hoses, belts, exhaust hose, and the seals in the raw water pump.

Batteries sulphate, particularly where the auxiliary is also the house charging source.

Why low engine hours can be bad news

Saildrives are their own thing

A saildrive is a vertical leg through the hull, and it has requirements a shaft installation does not:

The diaphragm seal. A rubber seal where the leg passes through the hull, with a manufacturer-specified replacement interval measured in years. Its failure lets water into the boat. It is expensive, it needs a haul-out, and it is skipped by owners far more often than it should be — the interval is a safety item, not a suggestion.

Leg oil, which must be checked for water. Milky oil means a seal has failed.

Anodes on the leg, wasting faster than hull anodes.

Isolation. Saildrives need correct galvanic isolation; an aluminium leg in salt water is vulnerable.

  • Keep the tank full and treated
  • Run the engine under genuine load periodically, not just in and out of the berth
  • Replace the impeller on time even if it looks fine

  • Check anodes, including the heat exchanger’s

What it costs

Small engines, but access in a yacht’s engine box is frequently poor and that drives the labour.
