A marine turbocharger works harder than most road turbos: sustained high load rather than intermittent boost, in a salt atmosphere, often with a seawater-cooled aftercooler immediately downstream.
Symptoms
- Loss of power, particularly at the top end
- Black smoke under load
- A change in the turbo’s whine, or a new siren-like note

Diagnose before replacing
Marine turbos are frequently condemned when the real fault is elsewhere and cheaper:
A blocked exhaust elbow. High back pressure destroys turbo performance and eventually the turbo itself. This is the most common marine cause and it is a consumable part, not a turbo fault. → Exhaust elbow replacement
A fouled bottom or wrong propeller, overloading the engine so it smokes and underperforms.
A restricted air filter or intake.

Shaft play measured against specification, which tells you whether the bearings are actually worn.
Why marine turbos fail
Oil supply problems. Blocked or carboned feed lines, low oil pressure, extended oil intervals. The dominant cause.
Exhaust back pressure from a corroded or blocked elbow.
Salt-laden air corroding the compressor housing and wheel.
Shutting down hot. Stopping immediately after sustained hard running leaves the bearing housing to heat-soak, coking the oil. On a boat this is easy to avoid — idle while you approach the berth.
Water ingestion from a failed aftercooler or an exhaust problem.
Repair or replace
Rebuilding — new core assembly, bearings, balancing — is legitimate and considerably cheaper than new, where the housings are sound. Balancing is the critical step.
Whichever you choose, the job is not finished without:
- Finding and fixing why it failed
- An oil and filter change, and flushing debris from the system
- A new oil feed line, not the old one cleaned
- Checking the oil drain for restriction
- Cleaning the aftercooler and intake of any oil the failed turbo passed
- Checking the exhaust elbow and back pressure
