Marine Cooling System Repair in Australia

Most marine diesels have two cooling circuits. The raw water circuit draws seawater and dumps it overboard through the exhaust. The freshwater circuit is a closed loop of coolant circulating through the engine, giving up its heat to the raw water in the heat exchanger. The closed circuit, and what fails

Thermostat. Sticks closed and the engine overheats; sticks open and it never reaches operating temperature. Running cold is a genuine fault, not a harmless one — it glazes bores, builds carbon and dilutes oil with unburnt fuel. → Engine running too cold

Coolant. Marine engines need the correct coolant with intact corrosion inhibitors. Those inhibitors deplete on a schedule, and depleted coolant lets the engine corrode internally — which is how an engine rots from the inside while looking fine outside. Topping up with water is a slow way to destroy a block.

Circulating pump. Bearing and seal wear; a weeping pump leaves coolant traces at the weep hole.

Hoses, header tank and pressure cap. A pressure cap that no longer holds pressure lowers the coolant’s boiling point and causes overheating that no other component explains. It is cheap and routinely overlooked.

Coolant loss with no visible leak

A closed system losing coolant with nothing on the bilge is a specific and serious pattern. The possibilities, in rough order:

  1. Pressure cap not holding, expelling coolant on heat cycles
  2. Perforated heat exchanger tube, pushing coolant into the seawater and overboard — invisible because it goes out with the exhaust
  3. Perforated oil cooler, coolant into the oil
  4. Head gasket or cracked head, combustion gas into the coolant

The first two are common and comparatively cheap. The last is expensive. A pressure test and a combustion gas test on the coolant distinguish them, and both should happen before anyone quotes to remove a head.

Maintenance that actually prevents failure

  • Replace coolant on the manufacturer’s schedule, with the correct specification — this is about corrosion protection, not freezing
  • Test coolant condition rather than judging it by colour
  • Replace the pressure cap periodically; it is a wear item
  • Replace hoses on age
  • Check the heat exchanger’s pencil anode
