Heat Exchanger Service and Descaling in Australia
The heat exchanger is the radiator of a marine diesel. Seawater passes through a bundle of small tubes; the engine’s own closed coolant circulates around them and gives up its heat. It works well and it needs cleaning, because everything seawater carries ends up inside those tubes.

What blocks a heat exchanger
Scale and mineral deposit built up on the seawater side over years.
Impeller fragments. The most common single blockage. When an impeller sheds blades they lodge in the heat exchanger inlet, and they will not come out without opening it. → Impeller replacement
Marine growth. Barnacles and weed drawn in through the intake, which in warm Australian waters is a fast process.
Silt and sand, particularly for boats berthed on rivers or operating in shallow water.
Corrosion product from neglected anodes — the heat exchanger’s own pencil anode, which many owners do not know exists.
Symptoms
- Gradually rising operating temperature, worse under load
- Overheating that appears only at high revs or when pushed
- Good water flow at the exhaust but the engine still runs hot
- Temperature that climbs on a hot day but is fine on a cool one
That last one is the classic partial blockage. The system has lost its margin but not its function, and it will keep working until the conditions get hard enough — which is usually the worst possible moment.

What the service involves
Removal and end cap inspection. Opening the ends to inspect the tube stack directly. This is where impeller fragments and growth are found.
Chemical descaling. Circulating an appropriate descaling solution to dissolve mineral deposit. Correct chemistry matters — the wrong product attacks the tube material.
Mechanical cleaning. Rodding the tubes where deposit is heavy.
Pressure testing. Confirming the tube stack has no leak between the seawater and coolant sides. A perforated tube pushes seawater into your engine’s coolant, which is a far more serious problem than a blocked one.
New end cap O-rings and gaskets — these are not reusable.
The pencil anode. Inspected and replaced. On many engines this is a routine item nobody has ever touched.
Coolant replacement, because the closed side gets disturbed and its corrosion inhibitors deplete over time anyway.
The failure people miss
A heat exchanger tube that perforates lets seawater into the closed coolant circuit. The symptoms — coolant loss, contaminated coolant, sometimes overheating — are easy to misread as a head gasket, and a head gasket job on a boat is a great deal more expensive than a heat exchanger.
Pressure testing distinguishes them. Insist on it before anyone pulls a head.

How often does a heat exchanger need cleaning? Depends heavily on water. Tropical, silty and shallow water foul far faster than cool clean water. Every few years is common; annually is not unusual in Cairns or on a river berth.
My engine only overheats at high revs — is that the heat exchanger? Classic partial blockage symptom. At low load the reduced flow is still enough; under load it isn’t.
Can a blocked heat exchanger be cleaned or does it need replacing? Cleaning usually restores it. Replacement is for a stack that is perforated or too corroded to hold pressure.
