How to diagnose marine engine overheating

Shut the engine down first, then work the raw water circuit from the sea inwards: seacock, strainer, impeller, heat exchanger, exhaust elbow — and only then look at the coolant side. Most marine overheats are raw water problems, and most owners start at the coolant filler cap, which is the wrong end.

An overheating marine diesel will destroy itself faster than you can drive it home. A distorted head, a failed gasket or a cooked turbocharger costs many times what the original fault does.

Stop first

If the alarm sounds or the gauge climbs into the red:

  • Reduce to idle, then shut down once it is safe to do so
  • Do not open the coolant cap on a hot engine. It holds pressure and the contents are scalding
  • Check for smoke or steam from the exhaust, which suggests water has stopped reaching it
  • Let it cool before touching anything

The sequence

Work in flow order. Each step is quicker than the one after it.

  1. Look at the exhaust. Is water coming out? No water means the problem is upstream of the exhaust and the engine must not run.
  2. Check the seacock is fully open. It is embarrassing and it happens.
  3. Open the raw water strainer and clear it. Weed, plastic bags and sand are the commonest cause, and in shallow or silty water it is routine rather than exceptional.
  4. Check the intake itself for growth or blockage, from outside if you can.
  5. Inspect the impeller. Missing or flattened vanes mean it is not moving enough water. Account for every vane — fragments travel downstream.
  6. Check the drive belt to the raw water pump where fitted, for slack or glazing.
  7. Consider the heat exchanger. Good exhaust flow plus overheating under load is the classic silted-exchanger signature — see how to tell if your heat exchanger is blocked.
  8. Consider the exhaust elbow. Corrosion and carbon build-up restrict both gas and water, and it is a known failure point on any wet exhaust.
  9. Only now check the coolant side: level, condition, cap seal, thermostat and circulation pump.

Things that are not the engine

Two causes get missed because they are outside the engine room:

A fouled hull or a damaged propeller. An engine working harder than it should at a given throttle position runs hotter. A boat with six months of growth is a different boat.

Over-propping. If the engine cannot reach its rated maximum rpm, it is working beyond its comfortable load at every setting, and heat is one of the symptoms.

When to stop

Stop and call a mechanic if the coolant is milky, if there is oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil, if the engine has already run hot for any length of time, or if you cannot find a cause in the raw water circuit.
