Marine Engine Electrical and Charging in Australia
A very large share of faults that present as engine problems are electrical, and a very large share of those are corrosion at a connection rather than a failed component. Salt air attacks every terminal, earth point and connector in the engine bay continuously.
The practical consequence: before replacing an expensive component, have the connections checked.
What fails
Connections and earths. The most common fault by a wide margin. A corroded earth causes symptoms that look mechanical — slow cranking, erratic instruments, intermittent alarms, charging faults — and replacing the alternator or starter does not fix it.
Alternator. Marine alternators work in heat and salt, often at sustained high output charging large battery banks. Failures are commonly the regulator, brushes or bearings.
Starter motor. Corrosion, worn brushes and failed solenoids. Slow cranking is as often a cable, earth or battery problem as a starter.
Batteries. The most common single cause of a boat that will not start. Marine batteries live hard: deep discharge, vibration, heat, and long idle periods. A battery that reads 12.6V at rest can still fail under cranking load — which is why load testing matters and a voltmeter reading does not settle it.
Wiring. Chafe, vibration, heat damage and rodent damage during layup.
Sensors and senders. Temperature, oil pressure and tacho senders fail and produce alarming readings from a healthy engine.

Marine specification is not optional
Automotive alternators and starters fitted to boats fail early and, in petrol installations, create an ignition risk. Marine components are built for the vibration, the salt and the duty. This is one of the clearest places on a boat where fitting the automotive equivalent is a false economy.
Charging systems
Modern boats carry large house banks alongside the start battery, and the charging system has to serve both without overcharging either. Faults here look like engine faults — a boat that cranks slowly after a night at anchor usually has a charging or battery management problem, not an engine one.
Ask for the whole system to be assessed rather than a component swapped.
Stray current
An electrical fault can drive corrosion through the water, consuming anodes, propellers and drive legs at a startling rate. If your anodes are disappearing much faster than they used to, an electrical investigation is warranted.
