Engine Alarms and Instrumentation in Australia

The alarm system is the only warning you get before an engine destroys itself. On a boat that matters more than in a car, because there is no roadside and the failure modes are faster.

Which makes the most common problem with marine alarms genuinely dangerous: they get ignored, silenced or disconnected because they are “always going off”.

An alarm you have learned to ignore is worse than no alarm

A nuisance alarm trains you to dismiss the sound. When the real one comes — an overheat that will destroy the engine in minutes, or an oil pressure alarm — you are conditioned not to react.

If your alarm sounds spuriously, fix the fault. Do not disconnect the buzzer.

What the alarms cover

High coolant temperature. The most important on a raw-water-cooled engine. → Marine engine overheating

Low oil pressure. Shut down immediately.

High exhaust temperature. Fitted to many installations and one of the most useful — it detects loss of raw water flow before the engine coolant temperature has moved, giving earlier warning than the temperature gauge.

Charging failure.

Gearbox oil pressure or temperature on larger installations.

Water in fuel, on systems with a sensor in the separator.

Bilge high water — not an engine alarm, but on the same panel and just as important.

Common faults

Failed senders, producing false readings or no reading. A cheap part that causes real alarm.

Corroded connections — the usual marine story. → Marine engine electrical

Failed buzzer, which is a silent failure: you have no alarm and no way of knowing.

Gauges reading wrongly while the alarm circuit is fine, or the reverse.

Alarms disabled by a previous owner. Worth checking specifically on any newly purchased boat — it is more common than it should be.

Test them

The alarms should sound at key-on before the engine starts — that is what the self-test is for. If yours do not, the circuit is not working and you have no warning system.

This takes five seconds and almost nobody does it. Make it part of your start routine.

Worth adding

  • Exhaust temperature alarm, if not fitted. It gives the earliest possible warning of raw water flow loss.
  • A raw water flow alarm, for the same reason.
  • Bilge high water alarm, independent of the pump switch.
