Sea Trial and Engine Performance Testing in Australia

A sea trial puts the engine under the load it was built for. Faults that hide completely at the dock — overheating, fuel starvation, gearbox slip, an overloaded engine — appear within minutes under sustained load.

The single most important measurement

Does the engine reach its rated wide open throttle RPM?

Every marine engine has a rated maximum RPM. Reaching it at full throttle, with a normal load, means the engine and propeller are correctly matched. This one number tells you more than any other single measurement on a boat.

Under rated RPM means the engine is overloaded. The propeller may be over-pitched, the bottom may be fouled, or the engine may not be making its power. A chronically overloaded diesel runs hot, smokes and wears out early — this is one of the most common and most damaging conditions in the Australian recreational fleet, and most owners have no idea their boat has it.

Over rated RPM means under-propped: the engine cannot deliver its designed power and the boat is slower than it should be.

What else to check under way

  • Temperature at sustained cruise, not just at idle. Cooling faults reveal themselves under load.
  • Exhaust smoke at idle, on acceleration and at cruise
  • Oil pressure hot at idle and at cruise
  • Gearbox engagement ahead and astern, and gearbox temperature after a sustained run
  • Vibration through the rev range, which points at shaft, coupling, alignment or propeller
  • Fuel delivery under sustained load — filter and tank problems show up here and nowhere else
  • Charging voltage under load
  • Steering, controls and alarms
  • Exhaust water flow throughout

Run at sustained cruise for long enough to reach true thermal equilibrium. Ten minutes is not enough; problems commonly appear after twenty or thirty.

  • Before a long passage
