Petrol vs diesel boat engines
For a boat, this is not the same decision as it is for a car. The considerations that dominate on the road — purchase price, fuel price at the pump, emissions rules — are outranked on the water by safety, range, and how long the engine will last in a marine installation.
Safety, first
Petrol vapour is heavier than air and it collects in the bilge. A boat is a sealed container with a low point, which is exactly the wrong shape for storing a fuel that produces explosive vapour at ordinary temperatures.
This is why petrol installations require blowers, ignition-protected electrical components and strict ventilation procedures, and why the pre-start routine on a petrol inboard is not optional.
Diesel does not produce an ignitable vapour at normal ambient temperatures. For inboard installations this single fact drives much of the market.
Range and consumption
Diesels are more efficient and are usually operated at lower revs for a given job. On a displacement hull the difference in range from the same tankage is substantial, and range is the thing that determines where you can go.
For a boat used for long coastal passages in Australia — where the distance between fuel stops can be considerable — this is often the deciding factor on its own.
Engine life
Marine diesels are built to run at sustained high load for long periods. Marine petrol engines are generally lighter-duty designs asked to do the same work.
The practical result is that diesel installations tend to have longer service lives under the loads a boat imposes, which is why commercial vessels are almost uniformly diesel.
Where petrol still wins
Purchase price. Petrol engines are cheaper to buy and cheaper to install.
Weight. A lighter engine matters on a small planing hull.
Power to weight at high speed. For fast, light boats, petrol is competitive.
Small outboards. Below a certain size, petrol outboards dominate for good reasons — cost, weight, simplicity, availability of service.
Servicing familiarity. Petrol engines are closer to automotive practice, which can help in some areas.
The Australian angle
Diesel dominates inboard installations here, which has a knock-on effect: the service network, the parts availability and the mechanic expertise are oriented that way, particularly outside the capitals. A diesel inboard is easier to get serviced in a regional port than a petrol inboard.
