Marine diesel at Scarborough

The Redcliffe peninsula’s boat harbour, sitting on the more exposed northern side of Moreton Bay with direct access to the bay’s open water and the Passage north.

More exposed than the rest of the bay

Scarborough boats see more genuine sea state than boats berthed at Manly or in the canals at Raby Bay. The northern bay is open, and a south-easterly builds a real chop across it.

Two consequences:

Engines work under load more often, which is generally good for them — fewer of the bore-glazing problems that afflict short-run canal boats.

Fuel tanks get stirred more often. A boat that regularly punches into a chop finds any settled water and sludge much sooner than one that never leaves flat water. That is arguably a benefit — it surfaces the problem while you are close to home rather than fifty miles out — but only if you act on it rather than replacing filters repeatedly.

Sand and shallow water

The northern bay is shallow and sandy, and boats operating in it draw sand through the raw water intake. Impellers abrade, heat exchangers collect it, and strainers fill faster than a deeper-water boat’s.

For a boat running north into the Pumicestone Passage or across to Moreton and Bribie, this is constant rather than occasional.

A fishing and cruising fleet

The harbour serves a substantial recreational fishing fleet plus cruising boats staging north. That gives the local trade a practical orientation — the workshops here are used to boats that get used, and to owners who need them ready for a specific weekend.

For anything the local trade cannot cover, the Brisbane river precincts are under an hour away.

Attendance and booking

Marina berthing makes mobile servicing straightforward. Hardstand and slipping exist locally, but as everywhere in south-east Queensland, book the lift before the workshop.

Diaries tighten ahead of summer and school holidays, and the wet season from about December disrupts scheduling.

Frequently asked questions

Is the northern bay harder on engines than the rest of Moreton Bay? Different rather than harder. More load and more sea state, which suits an engine, and more sand through the raw water circuit, which does not.

Why do I keep replacing fuel filters? Repeated filter blockage is a tank problem, not a filter problem. Chop stirs settled water and sludge; the tank needs attention.

Does shallow running cause damage? Sand drawn through the intake abrades impellers and settles in heat exchangers. It is constant for boats working the Passage.

Is mobile servicing practical? Yes — marina berthing means a mechanic works alongside.

Where is the heavy work done? Locally for much of it, with the Brisbane river precincts under an hour away for the rest.
