Marine diesel in Brisbane
Brisbane’s marine diesel trade is shaped by two bodies of water that behave completely differently, and which one your boat lives in changes what goes wrong with it.
Two waters, two sets of problems
Moreton Bay is shallow, sandy and, across much of it, turbid. Boats at Manly, Scarborough and Raby Bay draw sand into their raw water circuits. Strainers fill faster than owners expect and heat exchangers silt from the inside.
The Brisbane River is a different environment again. It runs muddy, and after heavy rain it runs very muddy, carrying debris with it. A boat berthed at Rivergate or Newstead deals with a markedly dirtier raw water supply than one in the bay, and the wet season makes it worse.
Both are warm. Warm water is the hardest condition a heat exchanger meets, because there is less temperature difference available to move the heat, and it consumes anodes faster than cooler southern water does.
What that produces in local workshops
The complaints that walk through the door here cluster predictably:

Anodes gone, and nobody looked inside. The pencil anode in the heat exchanger is the most neglected component on a Queensland marine engine.
Exhaust elbow corrosion. Warm salt water and a wet exhaust. It is a scheduled inspection item here, not a long-interval afterthought.

The trade here
Brisbane is the repower capital of the east coast. It has less new-boat glamour than the Gold Coast an hour south and considerably more of the workshops that take tired engines out and put fresh ones in. The river also carries commercial workboats, so the engineering firms supporting them handle heavier installations than a purely recreational precinct would.
