Marine diesel engines for Jeanneau yachts
Jeanneau is one of the two French production builders that dominate the Australian cruising fleet, and its boats share a set of engine characteristics that come up again and again in workshops here.
The usual arrangement
Jeanneau’s cruising range has overwhelmingly been delivered with Yanmar auxiliaries on saildrives — the smaller boats on two- and three-cylinder engines, the larger ones on four-cylinder units. Volvo Penta appears on some models and in some markets.
Verify yours from the plate on the block. Model years vary, options existed, and an Australian-delivered boat is not always the same as a European one.
The saildrive is the thing to understand about these boats. It is quiet, efficient and clean-hulled, and it puts a rubber diaphragm between you and the sea with a manufacturer-specified replacement interval. Read how a saildrive works if you have not replaced yours.
What comes up on these boats
The diaphragm nobody has changed. On a fifteen-year-old Jeanneau bought second-hand, the single most important thing to establish is when the saildrive diaphragm was last replaced. “I don’t know” is common and it is not acceptable.
Leg anodes. An aluminium leg in warm Australian marina water consumes anodes briskly, and the leg costs more than a full engine service to replace.
Antifouling the leg. Copper-based antifouling on a bare aluminium saildrive causes exactly the corrosion the anodes are fighting. Aluminium-safe systems and correct priming matter.
Fishing line behind the propeller. A common cause of leg oil going milky as the lower seal is cut. Check after any fouling.
Access. Engine access on most of the range is through the companionway steps and side panels. The front and top of the engine are reachable; the back of it and the exhaust elbow generally are not without effort. Budget more labour than the job sounds like.

Repowering a Jeanneau
The saildrive constrains it. Replacing an engine on a saildrive normally means staying within the same manufacturer’s drive family or accepting a substantial installation change including the hull aperture and the diaphragm mounting.
That is not a reason to avoid a repower — it is a reason to have the conversation about the leg and the engine together, and to get the quote itemised so the leg work is visible.
Ask specifically:
- Is the leg being replaced, reconditioned or reused?
- Is the diaphragm included?
- Does the hull aperture need modification?
- New instrument panel and loom, or reuse?
- Propeller — folding, feathering or fixed, and is it in the quote?
