Marine diesel engines for Catalina yachts

Catalina is the great American production cruiser, and the boats in Australia differ from their European counterparts in one structurally important way: many of them are shaft-driven, not saildrive.

The usual arrangement

Catalina’s cruising range has commonly used shaft-driven auxiliaries, with Universal (Kubota-based), Yanmar and Westerbeke units appearing across the years. Some models and later boats use saildrives.

Establish which you have. It changes the maintenance profile entirely.

Why shaft drive matters here

A shaft-driven auxiliary has:

  • No rubber diaphragm holding back the sea, and therefore no time-based replacement item with a haul-out attached
  • A stern gland and cutless bearing as the wear items instead
  • Far more freedom in a repower — you are not tied to a drive family
  • Alignment as a periodic requirement

For an owner, this generally means lower and more predictable below-waterline maintenance than the French saildrive fleet. It is one of the genuine attractions of these boats.

The Kubota point

Many Universal engines in this fleet are marinised Kubota industrial blocks. That is good news for parts: the base engine has an enormous industrial support network in Australia, and many wear items are available well beyond the marine channel.

Marine-specific parts — heat exchanger, exhaust manifold, raw water pump — come through the marine chain. Knowing which is which saves real money.

What comes up

Stern gland condition. Traditional packing glands drip by design; dripless seals do not. Establish which you have and service it accordingly.

Cutless bearing wear, which shows as shaft play and vibration.

Raw water side on an older engine. These boats are often decades old and the cooling circuit has frequently been repaired rather than renewed.

Engine access. Under the companionway steps, with the usual constraint at the back of the engine.
