Marine diesel engines for Bavaria yachts

Bavaria builds to a German production standard and to a price, and both of those show up in the engine installation in ways that are worth knowing.

The usual arrangement

Bavaria cruising yachts have been delivered predominantly with Volvo Penta saildrive auxiliaries, with Yanmar on parts of the range and in certain periods. Engine size steps with boat size across the range.

Check the plate on the block rather than assuming from the model.

What comes up on these boats

The saildrive diaphragm. As with any saildrive yacht, the rubber diaphragm between the leg and the hull is the item that matters most and the one owners most often cannot date. Time-based interval, haul-out job.

Systems built to a budget. Bavaria’s proposition has always been a lot of boat for the money, and the compromises tend to be in fit-out and systems rather than in structure. On an older boat, the wiring loom, the instrument panel, hose clamps and the engine bay insulation are worth inspecting properly. None of that is a criticism of the engine; it is where the age shows.

Engine bay access. Access through the companionway steps is workable at the front and top of the engine. As with most production cruisers, the back of the engine and the mixing elbow are the awkward part.

European design, Australian water. These boats were engineered for Baltic and Mediterranean conditions. In a Queensland marina in February, engine bay ventilation and cooling system margin are worth checking rather than assuming.

Motoring pattern. Production cruisers motor more than their owners acknowledge, mostly at low load. Prolonged light loading glazes bores — give the engine a real working load regularly.

Repowering a Bavaria

Saildrive constrains the engine choice to the drive family unless you take on hull aperture and mounting work.

On an older Bavaria the honest conversation includes the systems around the engine — loom, panel, exhaust, hoses, mounts — because they are the same age as the engine and a repower that ignores them just moves the next problem along.

Frequently asked questions

What engine is in my Bavaria? Most carry Volvo Penta saildrive auxiliaries, with Yanmar on parts of the range. The plate on the block is authoritative.

How often does the saildrive diaphragm need changing? At the manufacturer’s time-based interval for your leg. Unknown history should be treated as overdue.

Are Bavarias hard to service? No harder than comparable production cruisers. The front and top of the engine are accessible; the back and the mixing elbow are the difficult part.

What should I inspect on an older Bavaria? The systems around the engine — loom, instrument panel, hose clamps, mounts and exhaust. That is where the age tends to show first.

Is the engine bay ventilation adequate in Australia? Worth checking. These boats were designed for cooler European conditions and a hot marina afternoon here is a different environment.
