How to read marine engine exhaust smoke
Black smoke means too much fuel for the air available, blue means burning oil, and white means unburnt fuel or water. Colour tells you which system to investigate; when it appears — cold, hot, at idle, under load — tells you where in that system to look.
A brief puff on a cold start is normal on many engines. Persistent smoke is a fault, and on a boat it is usually a fault that costs fuel long before it costs a repair.
Black smoke: too much fuel, not enough air
The engine is being asked for more than it can burn cleanly.
Under load, getting worse over time — the boat is working harder than it should. Hull fouling, a damaged or wrong propeller, or an overloaded vessel. If the engine cannot reach its rated maximum rpm, it is over-propped.
Under load, sudden onset — air supply. A blocked air filter, a collapsed intake hose, a turbocharger problem or a restricted exhaust.
At all loads — injection. Worn or dirty injectors delivering a poor spray pattern, or incorrect pump timing.
With an overheat — a restricted exhaust elbow chokes gas flow as well as water flow.
Black smoke is the most common marine complaint, and the most common underlying cause is not the engine at all. Check the bottom and the propeller first.
Blue smoke: burning oil
Oil is reaching the combustion chamber.
On start-up, clearing quickly — valve stem seals.
Continuously, with high oil consumption — worn bores or rings. Often the end result of prolonged light loading, which glazes cylinder walls so the rings stop sealing. See why low hours is not good news.
On a turbocharged engine — turbo seals, particularly if accompanied by oil in the intake.
After extended idling — wet stacking, where unburnt fuel and oil accumulate. It may clear with a proper run under load.
White smoke: unburnt fuel or water
On a cold start, clearing as it warms — normal on many engines.
Persistent white, smelling of diesel — unburnt fuel. Poor compression, faulty injectors, or injection timing.
Persistent white, sweet-smelling, with coolant loss — coolant entering a cylinder. Head gasket, cracked head or a failed cooler. Stop.
Steam rather than smoke — water in the exhaust, which on a wet exhaust may simply be the raw water flashing off a hot elbow. If it is accompanied by an overheat, treat it as an overheat.
The reading sequence
- Note the colour in daylight, against a light background if you can.
- Note when it appears — cold start, warm idle, cruise, full throttle.
- Note whether it clears or persists.
- Check whether the engine reaches its rated maximum rpm.
- Check oil and coolant levels and condition before anything else.
- Check the air filter and intake.
- Look at the hull and propeller if the smoke appears under load.
When to stop
Stop if the smoke is white and sweet-smelling with coolant loss, if the oil is milky, or if the smoke is accompanied by an overheat or an unusual noise.
