Marine diesel engines for trawler yachts

A trawler yacht is the one recreational boat type where the engine is deliberately under-worked, and that changes almost every rule of thumb from the rest of this site.

The arrangement

Displacement and semi-displacement trawler yachts typically run a single main engine on a shaft, often with a wing engine as a get-home on the more serious passagemakers, and one or two generators.

The main is usually large relative to the boat’s demands, because a displacement hull needs surprisingly little power to reach hull speed and the surplus exists for headwinds, current and margin.

What is different

Low load is the design intent, not neglect. A trawler main spends its life at a fraction of rated power. Engines specified for this duty are built for it. That said, periodic running at a genuine working load is still worthwhile, and most manufacturers say so.

Hours mislead upward. A trawler main with very high hours may be in excellent condition, because those hours were gentle and continuous. Judge on records, oil analysis and cooling condition rather than the meter.

Fuel is the dominant system. Long range means large tanks, long storage, and fuel that sits through seasons. Polishing, day tanks, duplex filters and water separation are standard on serious boats because contamination hundreds of miles out has nowhere to be fixed.

Everything is a system, and there are several diesels. Main, wing, generators — each with its own raw water circuit, impeller, anodes and schedule. The neglected one is always the one that does the least.

Access is usually good. The trawler layout puts machinery under the saloon in a space you can work in, which is a real and lasting saving.

The wing engine

The single most neglected item on this boat type. It sits for years, so its impeller sets, its fuel ages, its raw water circuit corrodes unused and its shaft seal deteriorates.

Run it under load regularly. A get-home engine that has not been exercised is not a get-home engine — it is a comforting object.

Repowering

Uncommon, because these engines are specified to outlast the ownership. Overhaul in place is the more usual major job, and the access supports it.

Frequently asked questions

Why do trawler yachts have such large engines? For margin — headwinds, current and reserve. A displacement hull needs little power for hull speed, so the main runs at a fraction of its rating.

Are very high hours a problem on a trawler main? Not necessarily. Gentle continuous running is kind to an engine. Judge on records, oil analysis and cooling condition.

How often should the wing engine run? Regularly, and under real load — not just started at the dock.

Why is fuel management so involved on these boats? Large tanks, long storage and long passages. Contamination has to be prevented rather than fixed at sea.

How many diesels am I actually maintaining? Main, wing where fitted, and one or two generators. Each has its own raw water circuit, impeller, anodes and schedule.
