Marine diesel engines for Seawind catamarans

Seawind is the Australian-designed cruising catamaran, and the boats were conceived for the conditions they are sailed in here — which shows in the engineering.

The usual arrangement

Twin engines, one per hull, commonly Yanmar or Volvo Penta, on saildrives across much of the range. Earlier and smaller models in the fleet have used other arrangements including outboard auxiliaries on the smallest boats.

Designed for these waters

The advantage of an Australian-conceived cat is that the engine installation was specified with warm water, hot engine bays and long coastal passages in mind rather than adapted to them. Ventilation, cooling margin and access were considered against the conditions the boats actually meet.

That does not make servicing optional. It does mean the boats tend not to have the marginal engine bay heat problems that some European imports show in a Queensland summer.

The usual twin-saildrive items — two diaphragms with time-based intervals, two sets of leg anodes in warm water, two lower seals.

Coastal passage use. Seawinds are sailed to the Whitsundays, up the Queensland coast and offshore. That means sustained motoring in calms and real load punching into a chop. Fuel filtration and cooling both matter.

Charging hours. As on any cruising cat, engines run for power as well as propulsion. Low-load hours accumulate; give them real load regularly.

Local support. Being an Australian brand, boat-specific knowledge and parts are considerably easier than for imported cats — a genuine practical advantage.
