ZF Marine gearbox distributors in Australia

ZF is not an engine brand. It makes the gearbox behind a very large share of Australian marine diesels, and it is the component owners most often forget exists until it stops working.

Verified dealer and service listings for Zf Marine are being compiled. We list marine businesses only after confirming them directly, so none appear here yet. Until they do, the manufacturer's own dealer locator is the authoritative list, and the guidance on this page applies whoever you choose.

Why the gearbox has its own supply chain

Your engine and your gearbox frequently come from different manufacturers, were supplied through different channels, and are serviced by different specialists.

That produces a recurring and expensive misunderstanding: an owner books an engine service, assumes the gearbox is included, and it is not. Gearbox oil is a different oil on a different schedule, and gearbox work is a different trade.

Ask explicitly whether the gearbox is in the quote. It usually is not.

What ZF covers

ZF Marine’s range spans small sailboat transmissions through to large commercial gearboxes and includes the Hurth designs absorbed into the range, which is why older boats carry Hurth-badged units still supported through ZF channels.

If your boat has a Hurth box, it is not orphaned.

What actually needs attention

Oil type and level. Marine gearboxes take specified fluids — some automatic transmission fluid, some engine oil of a stated grade. The wrong one causes clutch problems. The plate on the box tells you.

The oil cooler. Frequently sitting in the raw water circuit. When it corrodes it lets seawater into the gearbox, and milky gearbox oil is the result. It is a part to replace, not flush.

Engagement behaviour. Slow engagement, slipping under load or a delay of several seconds means something — often low oil, a control cable short of full travel or an idle too low to build pressure, and sometimes worn clutch packs.

Alignment. The single most common non-wear cause of marine gearbox failure is a shaft not aligned to the box. A rebuild without an alignment check afterwards buys a repeat. See how a marine gearbox works.

Exchange units

For common models, a reconditioned exchange gearbox is often faster and sometimes cheaper than a rebuild, and it comes with warranty. Worth asking about before committing to a strip-down.

What to ask before booking

  1. Is the gearbox included in this service, or quoted separately?
  2. What oil does my specific box take?
  3. Is the gearbox oil cooler being inspected or pressure tested?
  4. Is an alignment check part of the job?
  5. Is an exchange unit available for my model?

Frequently asked questions

Who distributes ZF marine gearboxes in Australia? ZF operates through appointed marine points and service agents. The manufacturer’s locator is the authoritative list.

Is my Hurth gearbox still supported? Hurth designs were absorbed into the ZF range and are generally still supported through those channels.

Is the gearbox included in an engine service? Usually not. It is a separate schedule with a different oil. Ask explicitly.

Why is my gearbox oil milky? Water is entering, most often through a corroded gearbox oil cooler in the raw water circuit. It needs replacing, not flushing.

Should I rebuild or exchange? On common models an exchange unit is often faster and comes with warranty. On uncommon ones a rebuild may be the only route.
