Marine diesel in Cairns

Three fleets share this water and they break engines in three different ways. Knowing which one your boat belongs to tells you most of what your maintenance year should look like.

The three fleets

Game boats run long and hard offshore, then troll for hours at almost no load, then run home. Sustained high load followed by extended idling is the combination that produces both cooling complaints and carbon problems in the same engine.

Reef tourism vessels work to a timetable: out in the morning, moored at a pontoon or site for hours with generators and auxiliaries running, back in the afternoon, every day of the season. High annual hours, heavy auxiliary load, and no tolerance for downtime.

Remote commercial and cruising boats run north to Cape York and out into the Coral Sea, where nothing can be fixed. Their failures are not more frequent — they are just far more consequential.

What actually comes through the workshop door

Overheating traced to the heat exchanger, not the impeller. Warm water gives a heat exchanger less temperature difference to work with, so a partial blockage that would be tolerated in Hobart causes an alarm here. The impeller gets changed first, the problem returns, and the exchanger was the answer all along.

Diesel bug and water in fuel, which the wet season manufactures. A tank breathing humid air every night condenses water on its walls, and the interface between that water and the fuel is where the growth lives.

Electrical faults from humidity — corroded terminals, chafed looms, alarm senders that read wrong. On an engine that is fine, an instrumentation failure still stops the day.

The wet season runs the year

From about November to April the wet and the cyclone risk shape everything: operating patterns, where boats are kept, insurance requirements and yard availability.

Major work happens in the dry, and dry season slots book out. A boat owner who waits until the season starts to book a repower has already lost that year. Plan in the wet for work in the dry.

The trade

The Trinity Inlet precinct around the port carries the largest marine engineering capability in Far North Queensland — slipways, hardstand and workshops that handle serious commercial work. Yorkeys Knob serves the recreational fleet at Half Moon Bay, and Port Douglas the reef charter and game boats to the north.

These firms fix what cannot conveniently be sent south, because south is a very long way. That is the defining characteristic of the market, and it is why the engineering depth here exceeds what the population would suggest.
