Marine diesel in Bunbury and Busselton
South West WA: a sheltered bay, an unsheltered coast outside it, and Perth close enough to supply the region but not close enough to service it.
What breaks here
Sand through the raw water intake. Geographe Bay is shallow and sandy in its inshore reaches, and a large part of the fleet is trailered and launched off beaches and ramps. Sand abrades impellers and settles in heat exchangers. For the trailer fleet, flushing after each use does more good than any other single habit — and it is the one most often skipped.
Fuel under motion, outside the bay. Geographe Bay is comparatively benign; the coast around the capes is not. The afternoon south-westerly builds a reliable chop through summer, and boats come home in it. A tank that behaves in the bay finds its sludge off the capes.
Layup over a wet, cold winter. The South West season is real and the fleet quietens. Time-based deterioration is the local risk.
Moderate corrosion. Cool to temperate water. Anodes here last longer than in Queensland, which is one thing an owner gets for free.
The WA parts question, at one remove
Everything true of Perth’s supply chain is true here with two hours added.
A part not held in Western Australia comes across the Nullarbor. A part not held in Bunbury comes from Perth. Neither is a barrier and both are lead time, so the question to ask a workshop is the same one Perth owners ask: do you hold it, or does it come from somewhere else, and how long?
Confirm before authorising work rather than after.
The trade
Bunbury has a working port, the Koombana Bay marina precinct and a commercial fishing presence, plus industrial engineering attached to the port and the region’s resource industries. That gives it more heavy capability than its recreational fleet would sustain.
Busselton and the Geographe Bay coast carry the recreational and charter fleet, with Augusta and the capes fleet further south.
Perth is about two hours from Bunbury for dealer breadth and for anything unusual.
Booking
The wet winter months, when the recreational fleet is quiet and yards have capacity.
Frequently asked questions
What matters most for a trailered boat here? Flushing after each use. Shallow sandy launching puts sand through the raw water circuit, and flushing is the habit that prevents most of the damage.
Why does my engine struggle coming home? The afternoon sea breeze builds a chop that stirs the fuel tank. Settled water and sludge reach the pickup and the filters block.
How long do parts take? What is not in Bunbury comes from Perth; what is not in WA comes across the Nullarbor. Ask before authorising work.
Is Geographe Bay hard on engines? The bay itself is comparatively benign. The shallow sandy inshore reaches and the coast outside the capes are the harder parts.
When should I book work? Winter, when the fleet is quiet and yards have room.
